Since the early 2000s, Walney Island and Barrow-in-Furness have been synonymous with Offshore Wind Farms. Situated on Britain’s Energy Coast, the town of Barrow-in-Furness is a hub for many of the biggest companies in the field. Britain has more offshore wind farms than anywhere else in the world and Boris Johnson has hailed it as the ‘green industrial revolution’.
Orsted’s Barrow Offshore Wind Farm in the East Irish Sea was one of the first offshore wind farms built in the UK. Operational since 2006, the 30 turbines generate enough power for around 80,000 homes every year. Barrow Wind Farm has now been joined by the Walney, West of Duddon Sands and, one of the biggest wind farms in the world, the Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm.
As the UK makes its transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, the renewable energy industry will see huge growth in the coming years. The government is investing almost £100 million creating new wind turbine ports in northeast England and GE Renewable Energy will build a new wind blade factory at a former steelworks in Teesside. The offshore wind workforce is set to grow two and a half times its current size by 2030, from 11,000 to 27,000.
